Peace and Global Citizenship Education in the English as a Foreign Language Classroom (under construction)

Learning objectives and brief outline

Abstract

The learning module will critically examine the interconnectedness of education for peace, global citizenship education (GCE), and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teaching and learning. It will begin by highlighting the foundational principles of peace education and GCE, drawing from UNESCO's recommendations and the document "Peace Education in the 21st Century." It emphasizes how EFL can serve as a powerful tool for fostering intercultural communicative competence, critical thinking, and global awareness. Key goals and objectives of peace education will be integrated into the discussion, along with aspects of cultural learning, teaching literary texts, and intercultural communication. Key topics include:

• The role of language in promoting peace, understanding, and intercultural dialogue.
• Strategies for integrating GCE and peace education into EFL curricula, aligning with transformative practices like participatory learning, critical pedagogy, and conflict resolution.
• Developing intercultural communicative competence through EFL teaching and learning.
• Utilizing literary texts to promote cultural learning, empathy, and global perspectives.
• Pedagogical approaches that enhance both linguistic skills and global citizenship competencies.
