Interpersonal Communication with Persons with Disabilities (under construction)

Learning objectives and brief outline

Abstract

Interpersonal communication with persons with disabilities is essential for fostering an inclusive society based on understanding, respect, and equality. This learning module aims to expand students' knowledge of the interpersonal communication process, different types of communication, and barriers that may hinder effective message exchange. Special emphasis is placed on the specificities of communicating with individuals with various types of disabilities in everyday situations. Through theoretical and practical content, students will develop an understanding of the importance of adapting communication strategies to ensure clarity, accessibility, and respect for the needs of persons with disabilities. Additionally, the course encourages the development of skills necessary for effective communication not only with persons with disabilities but also with their families, equipping students with the tools for a professional and empathetic approach. By enhancing their communication competencies, students will be prepared to promote inclusive dialogue, reduce communication barriers, and create an enabling environment that facilitates the active participation of all members of society.
