Spatial Justice: Understanding Inequality and its Geographical Dimensions (under construction)

Learning objectives and brief outline

Abstract

This learning module explores the concept of spatial justice, a critical framework for addressing inequality through the spatial organisation of society. Emerging from urban studies, planning theory, and human geography, spatial justice examines the unequal distribution of resources and opportunities, highlighting how these inequalities are produced and sustained. The learning module emphasizes the importance of considering the spatial dimensions of justice in both theory and practice, from local to global scales. Students will develop a geographical mode of critical thinking to address pressing societal and environmental issues such as climate change, migration, energy, mobility, and housing.

Learning objectives

Course participants who study the learning module will be able to

  • To define and identify spatial justice and injustice in various contexts.
  • To equip students with the key theories of spatial justice and apply them to analyse the conditions that produce spatial inequalities.
  • To evaluate strategies to minimise or reverse spatial injustices and assess their potential impacts.
