Learning Objectives and Brief Outline

Abstract

This learning module deals with the options for a new peaceful order in Europe after the Russian invasion in Ukraine and the foreseeable exit of the United States from its role as stabilizer in Europe. Specifically, it discusses the literature on ending wars, dealing with the concepts developed by research to explain the conditions for the settlement of military conflicts and the potential for negotiated solutions. Political science approaches to explain the success and failure of negotiations will be presented, and then applied to the current case of the Ukraine war.

Learning Objectives

Course participants who study the learning module will be able to

• Understanding the problems of ending wars
• Being aware of fundamental concepts developed to explain the negotiated settlement of armed conflicts
• Developing options for a post-Ukraine peace order in Europe
