Ethnic Diversity and Economic Welfare in Post-Conflict Societies (under construction)
Learning objectives and brief outline
Abstract
This module explores the complex relationship between ethnic diversity and economic welfare, with a particular focus on post-conflict societies. Students will engage with contrasting theoretical perspectives that emphasize both the potential benefits and challenges associated with ethnic diversity, as well as the possibility of varied outcomes at different levels of analysis. The module provides insights into empirical evidence from post-conflict regions of South East Europe, where research suggests that preserved and inclusive ethnic diversity can contribute positively to economic development and social reintegration. By completing this module, students will gain a deeper understanding of how conflict-related migration shapes patterns of ethnic diversity and influences the long-term socio-economic outcomes of post-conflict societies, informed by both theoretical frameworks and empirical research strategies.
