Gender and Peacebuilding (under construction)

Learning objectives and brief outline

Abstract

The module provides an interdisciplinary introduction to Gender Studies, focusing on the ways in which sex, gender and sexuality mark our bodies, influence our perceptions of self and others, organise families and institutions, delimit opportunities for individuals and groups, and shape lived experiences. The first part of the module will explore the ways in which various inequalities, exclusions and asymmetries persist and are reproduced in contemporary societies, also adopts an intersectional approach (i.e. how multiple factors or systems of power and oppression - such as gender, race, class, age and sexuality - intersect in defining social structures and people's lived experiences). The second part of the module focuses on the intersection between gender and peace and conflict studies, exploring topics such as gender violence in armed conflict; women's participation in conflict resolution; the Women, Peace and Security approach; and implications for peacebuilding and transitional justice.
