Learning Objectives and Brief Outline

Abstract

Working and communicating in intercultural teams presents challenges on multiple levels. Conflicts can often arise, and it is not uncommon for prejudices and biases to be formed or reinforced. To ensure successful intercultural cooperation, culturally sensitive and open communication is essential, alongside ongoing reflection on one’s own perspectives, prejudices, and biases.  This learning module introduces the fundamentals of intercultural communication and self-reflection. It aims to provide learners with a solid foundation for constructively, reflectively, and productively addressing cultural differences within intercultural collaborations. The module uses short video clips, in-depth texts, work tasks and reflections to define and discuss important concepts such as "culture", "communication", and "reflection". It also addresses the specific characteristics of intercultural communication, particularly the relationship between perception, interpretation, reflection, and communication. This approach empowers participants to navigate intercultural interactions in a more inclusive way.

Learning objectives

Course participants who study the learning module will be able to

• The students understand what culture means and how cultural differences can influence communication and cooperation.
• The students understand the importance of reflecting on their own cultural backgrounds, biases, and communication patterns for successful intercultural interactions.
