Videoproduction for students

Setting videos in ILIAS

As a final step before the very last step, it can be useful to share your video with others in order to receive feedback. In principle, it is advisable to plan a feedback loop before the video is finally published or submitted to the teacher. It is also a good idea to consult the assginment again to get an assessment of whether the video corresponds to the task set. Your own objectives can also be used here as a foil.

Once your video has been edited, converted and, if necessary, compressed, you can upload it to ILIAS. To do this, please follow the lecturer's instructions. In principle, you can integrate videos in different ways - as an interactive video, as a video on a page (wiki, group, learning module) or as a file in the exercise. You can find video instructions for these three scenarios here.

The data upload in ILIAS is limited to 200 MB. Please make sure that you compress the file you want to upload accordingly.

If your video is too large for the file upload, you can compress it before uploading using the free software Handbrake. The file size can be reduced very well with this program while maintaining almost the same image quality.

The quality of the compressed video naturally depends on the selected profile. In our practice, the following settings have proven successful:

  • Start Handbrake and drag and drop the video file into the specified area. Alternatively, you can also select the file on your hard disk under Source selection.
  • Select the default setting: General - Very Fast 720p30
  • Under save as, you can see where and under which file name the compressed video will be saved. You can adjust the path and file name if required.
  • Select .mp4 as the video format.
  • To start the compression, click on start encoding. The process may take a while, depending on the equipment of your PC and the length of the video.
Video compression with Handbrake

A detailed tutorial on video compression with Handbrake can be found on the developer page.

The video for embedding an interactive video is still being created.
