Activating prior knowledge makes it easier for learners to build on what they already know. Furthermore, by determining prior knowledge, teachers gain valuable insights into the requirements for the teaching/learning material to be designed.
Activate prior knowledge with entry tests
Tests allow you to assess the knowledge level of your learning group before the course begins and give learners an idea of what prior knowledge will be helpful for your course.
Assess prior knowledge using self-assessments
As with tests, you can use a survey to determine prior knowledge and give learners an insight into what they might need for the course. However, no points are awarded for answering surveys; there is no “right” or “wrong.” Thus, surveys are generally detached from the context of assessment and, in the case of querying prior knowledge, represent more of a self-assessment.
Set up starting points to determine the prior knowledge of course participants before the course begins
Both surveys and tests can be set as starting objects for courses. This means that they must be completed before the course content becomes visible. This ensures that all course members complete the survey or test.
